Liverpool vs City: 200 Matches of History and an Insured Bet

England's defining rivalry of the last 15 years is at Anfield on Sunday. The history, the team news, and how a 50% bet insurance from Coins.Game works.

Liverpool vs City: 200 Matches of History and an Insured Bet

On Sunday, October 11, at 4:30pm UK time, Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield. For 15 years these two clubs carved up English football between them, and almost every meeting shaped a title race. For this game Coins.Game has launched bet insurance: if your pick does not come in, half the stake comes back as a free bet.

First a little history, then the latest team news, and finally a closer look at the insurance.

The rivalry in numbers

  • 201 matches in all competitions: 95 Liverpool wins, 53 City wins, 53 draws.
  • League titles: Liverpool 20, City 10.
  • Biggest wins: Liverpool's 6-0 at Anfield in October 1995, and City's own 6-0 back in 1935.

The overall record favours Liverpool, but recent years belong to City: last season they won all three meetings with a combined 9-1. That was 3-0 in November, 2-1 at Anfield in February and 4-0 in the FA Cup in April.

Five seasons that made this rivalry

2013/14: the slip

Liverpool were chasing their first title in 24 years but dropped points in the run-in, and City took the title on the final day by two points.

2017/18: Liverpool rout City in Europe

In the Champions League quarter-final Liverpool won 5-1 on aggregate and went on to reach the final.

2018/19: 98 vs 97

The tightest race in Premier League history. Liverpool finished on 97 points and lost one league game all season, to City. City finished on 98 and took the title by a single point.

2019/20: thirty years of waiting

Liverpool hit 99 points and won their first Premier League title, their first championship since 1990. City finished 18 points behind.

2021/22: one point again

93 for City, 92 for Liverpool, decided on the final day. The 2019 script, almost word for word.

Then the paths split. Liverpool won their 20th title in 2025, Arsenal were champions last season, and City consoled themselves with two cups. This summer both clubs changed managers: Enzo Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola at City, and Andoni Iraola succeeded Arne Slot at Liverpool.

Team news

Liverpool are sixth with two wins and three draws, unbeaten. The bad news came today: Iraola confirmed that Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo will miss the game after picking up injuries on international duty. Between them they have five of the team's seven league goals. The good news: defender Jeremy Jacquet is fit, and Federico Chiesa is back in training.

Manchester City have won all five league games and sit top. Phil Foden is suspended, but the rest of the attack, led by Erling Haaland, is available.

Coins.Game odds as of October 9: Liverpool 2.90, draw 3.70, City 2.26. A fuller breakdown of form, line-ups and three match scenarios is in our match file.

Bet insurance: how it works

Bet insurance works like an umbrella for a rainy day. You bet as usual, and if the bet loses, part of the stake comes back. For Liverpool vs City, the Coins.Game terms are:

  • activate the promotion on the insurance page;
  • bet $5 or more on Liverpool vs Manchester City at odds of 1.8 or higher;
  • singles and accumulators count, pre-match and live, on any market;
  • if the bet loses, you get a free bet worth 50% of the stake, up to $50;
  • the free bet arrives within 24 hours of settlement;
  • the promotion runs until October 12, 23:59 UTC. Cancelled and voided bets do not count.

When the insurance works best

The sweet spot is $100

Half of $100 is exactly $50, the insurance cap. Bet $200 and still only $50 is covered. Bet $20 and the insurance is $10. To get the most from the promotion, $100 is the sweet spot, but always size the stake to your budget, not to the promotion.

All three outcomes qualify

The minimum odds are 1.8, and even favourites City are 2.26 for this game. So you can insure any outcome: a Liverpool win, a draw or an away win.

A bold pick with a safety net

Insurance shines on risky bets. Example: $100 on Liverpool at 2.90. If the hosts win, you collect $290. If they lose, a $50 free bet lands in your account. Without insurance the loss would cost the full $100.

A free bet is not cash

A free bet is a free stake, not money on your balance. As a rule, when a free bet wins you receive the net winnings without the stake itself. So the real value of a $50 free bet is a little under $50. Still far better than zero.

A bonus on top of a bonus

The game is on a Sunday, the first day of a new week for the Coins.Game sports bonus of up to $10,000 with no wagering, which counts sports bets from Sunday to Friday. Your insured bet counts toward the new week's turnover.

While you wait for kick-off, warm up with Big Bass Football Bonanza, the football edition of the famous Big Bass series.

What wagering is and why bonuses without it are worth more is explained in "What Is Wagering" and 9 other bonus questions.
